In 1999 I was approached by Evi Quaid, comic actor Randy Quaid’s wife about scoring a film she had just wrapped called ‘The Debtors’.

I later found out that Evi had persuaded one of the Microsoft billionaires, Charles Simonyi, at a party, to give her a cheque for $10M (and eventually a further $3M) to make a movie that Evi literally made up on the spot.

She assembled a great cast, including Michael Caine, Udo Kier, Catherine McKormack and Randy Quaid.

I recorded the orchestral score at Whitfield Studios in London. Evi and Randy attended the sessions. Evi and I then flew back to LA and had a grand time party hopping at that year’s Oscars (another story entirely - R.I.P. Hugh Hefner).

But the bad news began shortly after, when said billionaire saw the finished product. He refused permission to ever release the film - especially taking exception to a scene where Michael Caine is beaten around the head and ejaculated over by a giant, inflatable dildo by German band Rammstein.

Evi and Randy proceeded to grab the master copy of the film and go on the run, ending up in Canada where they evaded US marshals for a few years. They screened the film only once, at the Toronto International Film Festival.

For ‘The Debtors’, and its music, the rest is silence, until…
