DEACON BRODIE

from DEAD MUSIC VOL 1 by Simon Boswell

/

about

1997 ‘Deacon Brodie’. A little known film starring Billy Connolly. This was his first dramatic role and audiences were clearly confused that he just wasn’t funny. It was overshadowed by his other dramatic role in ‘Mrs Brown’ made the same year.

The film was directed by the late Philip Savile, an extraordinary man who previously had huge success with the series ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’ and, amazingly, had cast a completely unknown Bob Dylan in a BBC play called ‘Madhouse on Castle Street’ in 1963 before Dylan had released his first album.

‘Deacon Brodie’ was based on a true life Glaswegian rogue who survived hanging by using a hidden harness.

The score is one of my most ambitious. I composed Scottish flavoured jigs snd reels, orchestrated for 70 players and recorded in Glasgow with the Scottish National Symphony Orchestra.
